The plan for the day was a day trip to Girona.  We were met by our local guide and then we were off to Besalu which is about 20 miles away from Girona.  Our itinerary said it was " a magnificent historic-artistic site".  IT WAS!
We entered Besalu by crossing this medieval bridge.  Even in Spain we see activist signs/banners in ENGLISH!
We were treated to a sidewalk performance.  Click HERE to hear a bit.    I explored a bit of the "castle" but there too many steps for Granny.  Apparently there was a Jewish population until about 1415.  A mikvah dating back to the 1200s was rediscoverd in the 1960s while some excavation was being done.  Unfortunately, I didn't see the mikvah.  However, I did walk most of the way down the path and stairs that can be seen in the picture on the right.  These lead almost to the river.
Following our visit to Besalu, we went to visit the Jewish Quarter of Girona.  According to some guide books, the Girona Jewish Quarter is one of the best preserved in the world.  We visited the Museum of Jewish History where we saw a number of old artifacts and also a beautiful courtyard as seen in these pictures.
The Jewish Quarter is also known for its narrow streets with lots of stairs.
We walked from the Jewish Quarter to the Girona Cathedral.
